nature + geometry = clothing

Stopped by the Metropolitan Museum this morning for a quick peek at the Costume Institute’s latest — a sumptuous all-black show that brought me back to my design-school Gothic Lolita days. Jet beads, veils, fingerless gloves, and jaunty hats… and that Victorian flair for the dramatic. Enjoy!

Until recent years, I’d always dreaded LA’s traffic, smog, and superficial entertainment culture, but the more friends I have who move there, the more I discover the city’s appeal: warm, sunny weather; deliciously fresh, inventive food; sleek modern architecture; and lots of wide open space that fosters a strong creative culture. But enough with the words, here are a few photos from my trip there this weekend. (My outfits, from top: the Point Blazer at the Ace Hotel Palm Springs; the Plunge Romper and TI x Studio Joo Y Petal Necklace in Joshua Tree; and the blush Long Plunge Dress at Joshua Tree.)

It’s rare that we see a garment again once it’s been shipped halfway around the world, but Australian jewelry designer Linda van Niekerk had ordered her Lithos Jacket to wear to her opening at the Museum of Arts and Design in New York, and after the exhibition she dropped by the studio to see (and try on) more of the collection in person. Her gorgeous designs in natural wood and metals blend the geometric with the organic, and she’d chosen the collarless leather jacket for its simplicity, to complement her statement jewelry. Next we’ll be furnishing her with an Ascent Top and custom Tectonic Dress… can’t wait to see how she pulls those together! For now, leaving you with Linda’s stunning, sculptural Forest Shadow ring:
